The Second Five-Continent Overseas Chinese Youth Chinese Character Chess Invitational Tournament opens in Yinzhou

In the afternoon of August 29, the Second Five-Continent Overseas Chinese Youth Chinese Character Chess Invitational Tournament, themed "Kinship in China, Connecting the Five Continents", opened in Yinzhou. More than 160 people participated in the event. In addition, four venues in New Zealand, Australia, Portugal, and Switzerland, representatives of over 30 overseas Chinese groups and Chinese schools from Oceania, Asia, Europe, and Africa, as well as over 700 overseas Chinese youth contestants and parents, gathered online to participate in the opening ceremony through video link. 

The Chinese Character Chess is not only a chess game, but also a puzzle game. It originated in Yinzhou, Ningbo and was invented by the Ningbo Chinese Character Application Research Institute in 2014. It has spread and influenced nearly 20 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, France, and the United States, and so on. It combines chess games with Chinese language learning, and is an interesting, scientific, and practical carrier for learning and entertainment. 

This event is held under the guidance of the All-China Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese and the Zhejiang Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, organized by the Ningbo Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Ningbo Municipal People's Government, and the Ningbo Sports Bureau, and undertaken by the Yinzhou Federation of Returned Overseas Chinese, the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the Yinzhou District People's Government, and the Yinzhou District Culture, Radio, Television, Film, Tourism, and Sports Bureau, aiming to showcase the achievements of promoting the Chinese Character Chess on five continents, gather overseas consensus, support the development of the Chinese Character Chess and popularization of the Chinese culture, promote conveying of the voice of China through overseas Chinese leaders, Chinese school teachers, and overseas Chinese teenagers, and promote Chinese culture to become popular in the world. 

Robert, Education Program Officer, UNESCO Representative Office in China, said in a video speech that Chinese is one of the oldest, most beautiful, and most populous languages in the world. UNESCO advocates for cultural exchanges and mutual learning among countries around the world; attaches great importance to supporting the innovative development of language communication in various countries, and is willing to contribute to the popularization and development of the Chinese Character Chess. 

This invitational tournament received strong support from over 30 overseas Chinese groups, Chinese language schools, and cultural exchange associations from five continents. In the early stage, more than 1,100 overseas Chinese teenagers signed up to participate in the competition. 

At the opening ceremony, an online pairing ceremony was also held between overseas Chinese groups and overseas Chinese language schools for the popularization of the "Chinese Character Chess", as well as a medal awarding ceremony for the Chinese Character Chess Overseas Communication Centers were held. After the opening ceremony, a seminar on the international popularization of the Chinese Character Chess was held, and the Ningbo Competition of Chinese Character Chess for Viewing was held simultaneously. 30 student representatives from the Georgia School in Ningbo, Zhejiang played chess onsite. 

It is learnt that the finals of this invitational tournament will be held online from 19:00 to 21:00 Beijing time on August 30. At that time, 240 overseas Chinese youth contestants from five continents will participate in the final competition.
