Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway, linked to Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway and Shanghai-Hangzhou Railway, extends 147 km in length, 66.5 km of which lies within the territory of Ningbo. By end 2001, the double-track line (Ningbo section of Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway) was completed and put to use. Apart from this, there is the 23-km-long feederline from Ningbo to Zhenhai Harbor Area and Zhenhai Refining & Chemical Co., Ltd., the 35.5-km-long feeder line from Ningbo to Beilun Harbor Area with design throughput of 10 million tons. The 13.7-km-long railway from Yuyao to Cixi has a design through capacity of 1.75 million tons a year and is linked to Xinshushan Station of Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway. Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway is designed to accommodate total 42.3 pairs of trains, including 12 pairs of passenger trains, with annual freight through capacity of 12 million tons.

Ningbo Railway Station is a national Class A passenger terminal. Its terminal building has a floorage of 5060 square meters and can accommodate 2,500 passengers at peak time. The through train from Ningbo to Baotou was opened on July 1, 1993, that from Ningbo to Hefei on April 1, 1997, and that from Ningbo to Beijing, Guangzhou and Jilin on October 1, 1998. The inter-city train between Ningbo and Hangzhou was added in 2000. In 2002 alone, Ningbo Railway Station dispatched total 3,935,000 passengers and handled total freight of 17,256,000 tons.

Ningbo North Railway Station is a national Class A freight terminal. Covering an area of 357,000 square meters, it is provided with 648 stack points, 15 loading lines and 16 special railway tracks. The Station provides full-carload and less-than-carload transportation, containerized transportation and water-land combined transportation. It plays a role in goods collection and distribution between Ningbo, Wenzhou, Taizhou and other coastal areas in east Zhejiang.

Target of railway development during the 10th Five-year Plan period: Complete the double track for the section between Zhuangqiao and Ningbo (part of Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway); fully complete the double track for Ningbo section of Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway so that it may accommodate 13 pairs of passenger trains and have an annual freight through capacity of 32 million tons. Strive for the construction of double track between Ningbo and Beilun and its supporting depots. Make good preparations for construction of Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Railway. 

Ningbo is preparing to establish a railway network leading in all directions. Go to cities in the west and north like Shanghai and Nanjing by Xiaoshan-Ningbo Railway, Shanghai-Hangzhou-Ningbo special train, Nanjing-Hangzhou Railway, Shanghai-Ningbo Railway (cross Hangzhou Bay); go to cities in the south like Xiamen and Guangzhou by Ningbo-Taizhou-Wenzhou Railway; go to cities in the southwest like Jinhua by Ningbo-Jinhua Railway; and Zhejiang-Jiangxi Railway links Ningbo to the Midwest Area.
